The Most Magical Birthday Party

By Nicki Medford, Publisher at Macaroni Kid Knightdale-Wendell-Zebulon October 24, 2019

A couple of weeks ago in Macaroni Kid Downtown-Midtown-North Raleigh, I shared how birthdays are a big deal in our house, along with the awesome Nerf-Battle birthday party we pulled off for my 9 year old son. But I have two kids, a boy (2 years older) and a girl, whose birthdays just happen to be 2 days apart. For the first few years of their lives as siblings we were able to pull off double birthday parties on our own terms.  However, the older they get, the more vocal they have become in their birthday requests. Apparently double birthday parties are no longer acceptable.  It has taken a bit of creativity and planning to pull off two different birthday parties in the same month.

My son is pretty straightforward and his Nerf-Battle birthday party came together very easily.  However, when my soon-to-be 7 year old daughter began listing interests and ideas for her birthday party, my head was spinning.  Princesses! No, Shopkins! Actually, no, a makeup party! Actually, how about princesses with Shopkins with makeup activities? Actually, how about a sleepover? Um, maybe a limousine party? (Let’s be real, the limo thing actually piqued my interest. How much fun would those 1st and 2nd grade girls have had riding around a fancy limo and going out for dinner? But limos are like, eleventy thousand dollars so that was out). As I tried to narrow down some of her interests, I came across A Sense of Adventure Parties, a brand-new, locally-owned party company with an extremely unique concept.  As soon as I showed my daughter photos of their party offerings on Facebook, we were both sold.

A Sense of Adventures specializes in picture-perfect indoor camping parties, complete with individual tents for each guest. They take care of EVERYTHING, from setup to tear down, with plenty of themes and add-on options to make your child’s birthday party extremely magical. My daughter chose the Princess Party theme.  Booking with Meghan, owner of A Sense of Adventures, was such a breeze! The hardest part was waiting for the day of the party to arrive.

When the day finally came, my husband took our kids out for lunch while I waited for Meghan to arrive. Meghan is probably the sweetest person you’ll ever meet. She was so friendly and engaging as she transformed our living room into an enchanted campsite fit for a princess.  I was so impressed by the attention to detail in the setup: a “campfire” with wood-printed pillows, sleep masks for each girl, Disney princess stuffies to tie in the princess theme, a movie projector and even individual bags of s’mores mix- containing teddy grahams, chocolate chips and mini marshmallows.  Meghan even had the cupcakes covered, bringing a dozen purple and pink vanilla cupcakes to the party. I literally just had to clean up my living room and send my husband out for a tray of Chick-Fil-A nuggets for the girls' dinner later that evening.  It felt very strange not having much to do, but it was refreshing letting someone else handle the work!

When my daughter walked through the door into her camping wonderland, all she could do was smile and dance and countdown the minutes until her royal guests arrived.  As the doorbell started ringing, moms and little girls alike squealed over the adorable tents, twinkling lights, and “campfire”.

The girls (birthday girl included) had no idea that there were even more surprises in store. I had previously contacted Enchanted Wishes Quality Character Entertainment, to bring Disney-inspired princesses to the party.  When I explained to “Fairy Godmother” (aka the owner of Enchanted Wishes) that the event was a slumber party, she had the best idea: she would have the princesses arrive at the sleepover in their PAJAMAS (if you’ve seen Ralph Breaks the Internet, there is an adorable scene from which this costume inspiration came).

This creativity is a huge part of what makes Enchanted Wishes my go-to for character appearances. I absolutely love the care and commitment each cast member brings to their characters. Princess Aurora came to the party in a cozy “Nap Queen” sweater, Princess Ariel wore comfy pajama shorts with a mermaid fin pattern, and Vanillope Von Schweets arrived in her signature hoodie. The princesses went above and beyond for our party girls, keeping them busy with crafts, signing songs, setting up a makeup & nail salon, and engaging in every detail of our party. Enchanted Wished brings this level of interaction and real-life dedication to every event they attend.

The rest of the party was a blur of pink, purple and princess dresses. After watching a couple of princess movies, enjoying their s’mores mix and a bedtime story, the girls finally settled down around 11pm. We all know that “sleep” usually doesn’t happen at sleepovers and this one was not immune to that cliche. They were ready to rise and shine right around 7am for their last couple of hours of princess camping fun. Meghan, with A Sense of Adventures, arrived shortly after the last little guest was picked up. The party clean up was as convenient as the setup. Within a matter of 20 minutes, my house was completely back to normal.

Thanks to the magic provided by A Sense of Adventures and Enchanted Wishes, I know that my daughter and all her royal guests will remember this party for years to come!!
